The Trevélez (Subida Mágica) Loop

A 120 km Loop to One of Spain’s Highest Villages, Featuring the Magic Climb

The Trevélez Loop

Ride Details
We’ve ridden in the Dolomites, the Alps, the Pyrenees, and the Massif Central—col bashing, as we like to call it! There have been some incredible climbs along the way, but one stands out above the rest: the climb from Órgiva to Trevélez in the Alpujarra region of southern Spain.
We even gave it a name—“Subida Mágica” (Magic Climb)—and it really is the heart of this route.

The route

You leave Alcázar and climb steadily out of town before dropping down with the stunning Sierra Nevada peaks in front of you towards Órgiva. From here, the ride begins in earnest as you start the ascent of the Magic Climb, one of the most memorable stretches of road in the Alpujarra.

After 33 km, you’ll reach Trevélez, the perfect place for a coffee stop and a chance to take in the views. From there, the route continues along the ridge, with breathtaking scenery all around, before beginning the descent into Cádiar.

Around the 100 km mark, the third climb of the day begins. This 8 km ascent, averaging 5.6%, takes you up to a ridge road where the Mediterranean lies to your left and the Sierra Nevada peaks rise to your right. It’s a spectacular stretch of road, with wide-open views and a fast, rolling profile that makes the miles pass quickly.

You then continue for around 15 km at an altitude of about 1,200 metres, riding a smooth, rolling road before descending back into Alcázar to complete the 120 km loop.

Why ride this route

What makes this route so special is the balance between challenge and enjoyment. It’s a long ride, but the climbing is steady rather than brutal, which means you can settle into a rhythm and enjoy the scenery.

The Magic Climb is the highlight for many riders, but the ridge roads, mountain views, and quiet backroads all add to the experience. If you enjoy long-distance cycling in Spain, this route is a standout.
